Our Pick

Despite the steep investment, the Le Creuset provides the best overall experience as well as heat retention.

We didn’t simply choose the Le Creuset because of its French-sounding name, even though that did play a factor.

This French-made cast-iron grill pan was able to win us over with its amazing performance and drainage.

When we talk about the looks:

The Le Creuset, it not only looks great but also comes in a variety of different colors. This is especially important if you are going to drop a hefty sum of cash on one of the best grill pans, you would want to customize it a little bit.

A grill pan is something that you don’t buy every day, it is always a long-term commitment and if it is the right one, it will last you a very long time. It is true that this grill pan is a little on the expensive side but it does provide one of the best designs and materials there are. It comes in 5 different colors which are nice considering many others don’t even come in two.

The square grill pan is made from enameled cast-iron which enables it to heat really evenly. The square skillet grill is wide enough to host a variety of different ingredients and items in one go. Preparing a full steak meal along with some vegetables is very easy on Le Creuset.

This grill pan is capable of evenly searing food and making beautiful looking char marks on it. It is one of the few grill pans that work perfectly on almost any heat source, this also includes induction stovetops as well as ovens.

Although the grill pan is dishwasher safe, the company recommends that you hand wash it just to be on the safe side. The design also offers an easy way to pour excess juices out of the pan without any kind of trouble. The ridges are evenly placed and are of appropriate height.

The only thing that we didn’t like is the high entry price; of course, it is understandable why this pan is a little expensive but it does make us wonder how well we could’ve done if it was priced a little bit lower. It is also a tad bit heavier, coming at around 8 pounds which is quite big of a pan but not a lot for a grill pan. Overall, if you just have to select one grill pan, the Le Creuset L2021-264 is the best one.

What makes Le Creuset L2021-264 the best grill pan of 2020?

One of the biggest things we loved about this grill pan is its non-stickiness, most of the food we tried on it didn’t stick at all. However, when something was sticking we applied a thin coat of oil and it was gone.

If you’re looking for a long-term relationship with a grill pan, this foreign beauty is simply one of the best you can choose.

The only thing that is not as impressive as the rest of the group is its weight.

The grill pan weighs around 8 pounds which is quite heavy, especially when compared with the rest of the grill pans. Understandably, cast-iron is usually really heavy but Le Creuset Enamled Cast-iron felt a little bit heavier.

On the positive side, if we are nitpicking about the weight, this generally means the rest of the grill pan is quite excellent.

  • Durable.
  • Easy to use and clean.
  • Enameled cast iron material.
  • Expensive.
  • Small in size.

Staub Grill Pan - Best Ridges for Marks

Best Ridges for Marks

If you want the best ridges in town, you’ll have to pay a hefty price for them. The Staub Grill Pan lifts your food high and makes it taste amazing.

It has a lot going for it but it’s on the best grill pans of 2020 list only because it has amazing ridges. They are deeper than any of the pans on the list and are spaced perfectly. It produces really aesthetically pleasing grill marks on your food and that alone is enough to sway any food lover.

Check Price on Amazon
The Staub Grill Pan came really close to take the number one spot on the list and for good reason. There is not a lot of difference between this grill pan and the #1 grill pan on the list. As a matter of fact, they provide almost the same usability and features.

The only reason is its weight, it weighs more than 10 pounds which is quite a lot, and we are not even considering the press on the weight.

When it comes to color choice, Staub comes in 7 different colors and almost all of them looked really great on the store shelf. We went with the grey one because we are boring people.

The pan is encoded in glossy multicolored enameling that not only brings strength to the design but also provides heat resistance. At first glance, the funky colors make the pan look ceramic.

This grill pan is highly resistant to chipping, rust, and cracking. One big advantage of this grill pan is that it doesn’t require any kind of additional seasoning like some other cast-iron pans. The pan is broiler safe up to 500F, which is a great addition. There is convenient sprouts place on either side of the pan to enable easy removal of liquids and juices.

What makes Staub 12-Inch an amazing grill pan?

We think that the Staub is an amazing grill pan and highly recommend it if you want to save a little bit of money and still get one of the best indoor grilling experience.

This grill pan hits the perfect balance between price and performance but is also usually on sale so make sure you watch out for those before you pull the trigger.

It is a cast-iron grill pan and also one of the biggest ones around. Another advantage of owning this pricey grill pan is the inclusion of a pretty heavy press. There are a lot of delicious foods you can make by using the press, including butterflied chicken (which is my personal favorite).

One major drawback to the large size is that the pan takes a little while to heat up, on the flip side of the coin, it retains the heat equally well.

Why isn’t the Staub Grill Pan right on the top of the list?

Well for one, it is quite expensive and secondly, it weighs more than 10 pounds and that is without the press. It’s a large, heavy and expensive grill pan but if you don’t have a backyard and need to do a cookout, cook-in in this case, it’s a perfect choice.

  • The deepest ridges out of all.
  • 12in of size is quite good.
  • Holds the heat for a long time.
  • The pan is quite heavy (10 Pounds+).
  • Takes time to get warm.

OXO Good Grips - Good to Glass

Good to Glass

OXO is the best glass stovetop grill pan because it won’t scratch your beautiful looking glass stovetop.

The glass is pretty, glass stovetops are prettier. However, we all know that scratch glass looks really bad and heavy metal is prone to scratching it. After that, we can come to the conclusion that most grill pans are really bad for glass stovetops. Yes, I did all the scientific conclusions myself and the OXO does not scratch the glass on your glass stovetop.

Check Price on Amazon
But how did OXO Good Grips achieve this level of non-scratchiness while others failed?

They used a 3 layer nonstick coating on the entire pan. That’s right, even the bottom of the pan is coated with that slippery nonstick coating. This means that the grill pan simply slides around rather than scraping around the glass.

OXO Grill Pan is an 11 inch Square grill pan that doesn’t want to scratch your glass top stove. We all know how scratchy glass is, drop a knife and it gets scratched, rub a little bit of aluminum and it gets scratched, place a huge grill plan on it and it definitely gets scratched. Thankfully, this grill pan comes with a special coating that allows it to simply glide on the glass and not scratch it.

The reasonably priced OXO Grill Pan has 3 layers of nonstick coating covering every side. On the top, it makes it hard for food to stick to it, on the bottom it acts as a cushion between the glass and the grill pan. We only have to be careful about the heat, heat it too much and you may damage the nonstick coating on the grill pan.

A subtle design element allows the OXO to capture all the juices and fat around the sides, which makes it easier to drain. The grill pan only takes around 7 to 8 minutes to fully heat up and retains it for 10 minutes or so, these are all great numbers.

The best thing about this grill pan is:

That it only weighs 3 pounds, and it is the lightest grill pan on the list here.

Not all is great in the kingdom though, the ridges are a little too short and too flat to leave those tasty char marks on your food. This is exactly why we have to place it on the 4th number on the list.

The ridges on this pan could have used a little bit of depth and some sharper shape to give those beautiful looking grill marks. However, this is just a small issue, especially if you have a glass top stove and don’t want to damage it.

The OXO Good Grips is not just the best glass stovetop grill pan, it is also really great for heat retention and even cooking.

The only downside:

The ridges are not as high as we would like. They are not completely shallow but they are not up to the mark and compared with the rest of the pans on the list.

They are also a little wider, the pan could’ve used a thinner size for better effect.

  • Perfect for Glass stoves.
  • 11in size is just perfect.
  • Easy to use and clean.
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Not so good with grill marks.

Lodge L8SGP3 - Style on a Budget

Style on a Budget

Just want to test the waters and see for yourself how well the food tastes but don’t want to drop a significant amount of cash? Get the Lodge L8SGP3.

If you are new to the grill pan world and just want to check out what the fuss is all about, the Lodge is a perfect choice for you. This very well-designed grill pan is almost half price than the number one choice on the best Grill pans for 2020 list but it doesn’t compromise on much.

Lodge is the only USA based manufacturer on the list and it is priced very reasonably. If you are on a tight budget and need a grill pan, this pan will do a remarkable job.

It is a pre-seasoned grill pan made out of cast-iron and features good quality non-stickiness. As a matter of fact, when it comes to nonstick performance, it ranks really high on the list.

The pan is also a great heat conductor, only taking around 5 minutes to fully heat up. It also takes a little while to cool down which is an inherent property of grill pans made out of cast-iron. If this is your first venture into the grill pan territory, the Lodge is the perfect pan for you.

It allows you to test out the advantages of a grill pan without spending a lot. Usually, the pan hovers around $40 mark but if you can catch it on sale, it’s easily available under 20$.

There are a few downsides:

The round ridges on the Lodge Grill Pan don’t leave those sharp char grill marks that we adore a lot. This is kind of problematic and is a huge negative if you want those tasty looking grill marks.

Another thing we noticed is the weight of the grill pan, while it’s not the heaviest on the list but it certainly has a weight to it. Coming in at around 9 pounds, it is one of the heaviest grill pans around.

One of the biggest reasons for the low price is the fact that it is manufactured in China. However, it is surprisingly sturdy and well made. The design is also really good and you’ll have no trouble delicious food on this one. As this is made from cast-iron, you’ll always need a little bit of seasoning to avoid stickiness. Brush a little bit of oil or sprinkle some salt to get the most off this pan.

The Lodge L8SGP3 is also able to heat up fairly quickly, especially considering it’s made out of cast-iron that is notorious for not heating up quickly. The pan will take only a few minutes to heat up and is a really great heat conductor.

Heat retention is one of the plus points of having a grill pan made out of cast-iron, the Lodge also has really high heat capacity.

  • Holds the heat perfectly and evenly.
  • Long lasting (Must follow the instructions).
  • Budget Friendly (Under $20).
  • Grill marks are the problem.
  • Quite heavy (9 Pounds).
  • Not easy to clean because of those deep ridges.

All-Clad E7954064 HA1 - The Electric Pal

The Electric Pal

Amazing heat conductivity, especially on an electric stove makes it the electric stove grill pan you can get.

The square design of the All-Clad grill pan makes it easier to cook a lot of food in one go. It is especially useful when you’re cooking for more than one person, which is a normal household is usually the case.

This grill pan also comes with a nonstick coat which makes it easier for you to cook juicy and tender food on it.

One of the major reasons why it is included on the list is its even heating on electric stoves. It works remarkably well when paired with any kind of stove but does an exceptional job on electric stoves too.

What really impressed us in All-Clad?

Usually, grill pans take a little while to heat up on electric stoves, but this hard anodized aluminum beauty doesn’t take that long. The pan is also coated with PFOA-free nonstick and scratch resistant coating that makes the food healthier.

The design includes a stainless steel handle that looks beautiful and is secured with stainless steel rivets.

Inside the pan, you’ll find evenly placed ridges that are not as pointy as we would like but they do the job well.

All-Clad Grill Pan is able to withstand up to 500°F without lids. It is dishwasher safe, and wash is recommended to avoid damaging the nonstick coating. This grill pan is also priced for reasonably coming under $50 mark which makes it a great recommendation for those on a budget.

One bad thing we didn’t like is the drainage, the All-Clad lacks the subtle design of the real pans, used to facilitate drainage.

It is made from stainless steel that is covered with a hard anodized aluminum exterior for that extra protection. The use of this material makes it one of the lightest grills pans on the list just weighing at 4 pounds. We were especially impressed at how easy it was to heat up the grill pan on an electric stove, it only took around 6 minutes to fully warm-up on medium heat.

Not all is great with the All-Clad though:

It lacks the proper heat retention that we are used to with cast-iron grill pans. It only takes around 7 minutes to start significantly cooling-off, thus just a minute more than it takes to heat up.

Another thing we didn’t like is the ridges, there are a little shallower and flatter to fully get those grill marks on food.

However, coming under $50 bucks, this indoor electric grill pan is an easy recommendation.

  • Best for Electric Stoves.
  • Easy to clean.
  • Budget Friendly.
  • Lacks the heat retention.
  • Ridges are not so good.

The best part:

Are you the kind of person who likes pancakes in the morning and burgers in the evening? Are you the natural party host that everybody looks up to for get-togethers? If the answer is yes, then Lodge LPG13 Grill Pan is the best grill pan for you.

There are several things to love about this grill pan and the biggest one is its ability to turn into a grill or a griddle just by flipping it over.

The cast-iron grill pan is not exactly a pan to be fair but we think it qualifies because of its versatility and utility. On the top side, you’ll find a large ribbed grill side that will allow you to cook burgers and steaks indoors. Flip it over and you’ll have a flat surface perfect for making breakfast. It is made from cast-iron which is amazing for heat retention and evenly heating the food.

The  downsides of this Grill Pan:

It takes two stovetop burners to heat up evenly, it is also big and bulky and requires a large storage space and it will definitely damage your glass top stove. So if you don’t need a large capacity or the extra benefit of a griddle, any other grill pan from the list will serve you better.

However, if you need to get some bulk cooking done in a jiffy, the Lodge LPG13 Grill Pan is one of the best options available for a reasonable price.

One of the best things about this versatile grill pan is its ability to turn into a griddle. Just flip it over and you’ll have a smooth side ready to cook pancakes for you. On the other side, the ridges are well spaced and will make your burgers juicy and delicious.

As this is a fairly large grill pan made out of cast-iron, it’s no surprise to us that it weighs more than 10 pounds. The transfer of heat is exceptional due to its large size and the heat retention is also phenomenal. The only downside is that it is absolutely not recommended for glass top stoves, it will definitely scratch them.

If you’re looking for a 2-in-one grill pan and a cast-iron griddle, the Lodge LPG13 Grill should be your first choice.

  • Awesome 20inch in size.
  • Reversible Grill or Griddle.
  • Extremely budget friendly.
  • Cleaning will be an issue if the grill was not properly seasoned.
  • Requires 2 stovetop burners to properly heat up.
  • Big and Bulky.
These are some of the best Grill pans of 2020 and will serve you well for years to come. However, let’s bite a little bigger into the burger that is the best Grill pans and learn more about them and how they work.

What is it though?

A grill pan is a pan with ridges inside it. The raised ridges called grill lines and are spaced around 2 to 1 cm apart from each other, they’re raised from the pan with around half a centimeter height. Basically, this allows the food juices to drip down and not stay in contact with the food you are cooking.

This is it, there are no complex mechanics used and is a simple product that makes tasty food.

Usually, a grill pan is also referred to as a griddle pan. I’ve also seen someone reference it as a broiler pan but no matter what you call it, it does the same thing. Most of the grill pans are the nonstick kind which is highly convenient for us food lovers. However, there are some that are made of different materials as well.

Why Should I Use it?

This is an excellent question anyone should ask before purchasing a grill pan. While they are not prohibitively expensive, some of the pans do cost a significant amount of cash and you should do all the proper research before dropping it down.

There are multiple reasons why you would want to use a grill pan and we’ll discuss them in great detail right here.

RidgesGrill MarksSave TimeIndoor Cooking
One of the major reasons why you would want to own a grill pan is the simplest one; ridges. A grill pan has ridges that make it easier to allow fat and juices to simply drop to the bottom of the pan. This not only makes it easier to collect the juices for sauces but also avoids them from interfering with what you are cooking.

We would go and claim that this makes the food healthier but there is no scientific proof of that, but we would still like to think that it makes food healthier just to feel good.

You may not think that they are a big deal but the chargrilled marks on steaks, do make them taste better. This kind of marks are usually found at outdoor grills and fancy restaurants but you can get them indoors too with the help of a grill pan.

Personally, I would always go with a chargrill marked steak than the one without them.

Almost all the grill pans on this list are big enough to cook meals for 2 people at least. Some of the bigger ones can even cook for a whole party if you are nifty. One of the best things about a grill pan is that you can cook different kinds of foods in one go.

For example, you can easily cook a chicken breast and a beefsteak without worrying about them tasting off.

Not everyone has a huge lawn or a backyard to enjoy outdoor grills. This is especially true for those living in apartments and flats. This doesn’t mean you should not enjoy grilled food, this only means that you have to invest in a great grill pan that will give you the benefit of cooking indoors.

Now you can have a cookout, rather a cook in, in a blizzard too.

Can I Use Them with My Stove?

Another excellent question, you are on fire today!

There are multiple types of stoves available and most of them are okay for grill pan but if you want the optimal performance while not damaging your stove, there are a couple things you should keep in mind.

ElectricGlass TopInduction
Electric stoves are amazing but they lack the raw power of fire. So, a heavy cast-iron grill pan combined with an electric stove means that it will take a lot of time to heat up. To make sure you get a steel one or the one that’s not made out of solid and heavy cast-iron.
Glass top stoves are really beautiful and you would want to preserve the beauty of them by not scratching. Once again, cast-iron is not really friendly to your glass top stoves, at least the one that is not treated with any additional material. Glass and ceramic is also a big no-no because it is also known to scratch glass.

As a matter of fact, even aluminum file can scratch the glass top, so you’ll have to be really picky with your selection.

Induction cooktops are rapidly becoming popular thanks to their exceptional heating power. They take very short time to heat up pots and pans and they are really friendly to cast-iron made grill pans. However, you want to scratch the top of the induction cooktop with a rugged cast-iron pan.

Select an enamel induction grill pan because enamel pan has a layer of a non-scratchy material underneath.

Who Am I?

I’m just a humble, single guy who loves food and loves preparing it himself more. I’m not the best cook around, not even the best in my family, but I’m certainly the best among my friends. That’s not saying a lot because none of my friends cook at all.

I’ve been cooking since my college days and know my way around the kitchen. Unlike most single guys, my kitchen is clean and is equipped with a classic stove and an oven. I have my fair share of kitchen accidents as well; I dropped the 8-pound grill pan on my foot just last week while doing work on this article. Thankfully it was not heated nor full, although my foot hurts really badly; nothing is broken (apart from my ego, it’s a little bruised).

What to Look while Buying a Pan? – Buyer’s Guide

There are several factors that you should keep in mind before purchasing a grill pan for your kitchen. Some may be really important to you while others may be totally negligible. However, we narrowed down 4 categories that we deem extremely important to look for when buying a pan.

Ridges & Grill LinesNonstickHeating Up & Cooling DownWeight
The biggest reason why you would invest in a grill pan are the ridges and Grill lines it offers. If they are too flat and shallow, you won’t get the full benefits of owning a grill pan. There are a lot of different types of ridges and Grill lines available on a variety of different grill pans, so it can get a little bit confusing. However, we highly recommend that you look for sharp ridges and well-spaced Grill lines.

You should also consider the height of their individual ridge, too shallow and you’ll get no benefit of owning a grill pan.

Just like every other pan out there, grill pans also come in a different variety of non-stickiness. Some have better nonstick coatings while others completely lack the ability to keep the food from latching on.

All of the grill pans on this list are nonstick and usually, don’t take a lot of effort to keep the food from sticking.

It is important to note how long it takes for a grill pan to heat on a stove.

Some pans are easily heated on open flame stoves, some heat up well on electric ones.

It is also good to know how long it takes to cool down, heat retention is somewhat important in cooking various dishes.

Most of the grill pans are a little on the heavier side but that’s the nature of pans in general.

Some of them weigh above 10 pounds which is quite a lot. And again, it is completely understandable that they would weigh a lot because of the materials used.

How Did We Select Pans?

We tested around 12 different grill pans for this article. All of them were selected from a shortlist we researched. Thankfully, a local store was kind enough to loan us all of the grill pans to test without having to pay almost anything. We did, however, pay for 12 chicken breasts pieces; they were used to test the performance of the grill pans.

Over the course of a little over a week I made the same chicken breast on different grill pans and tasted how well it was cooked and how delicious it tasted. This also allowed me to gauge how each panhandles an actual cooking.

I also gave the pans to my colleague who owns an electric stove and he cycled the same recipe on it as well. After the 6 best will pans were selected, we tested them on a glass stove. By testing we mean we consulted our boss on whether we can use a certain pan on his glass top stove and he only allowed 2 that he deemed harmless.

Closing Notes:

This concludes the best grill pans list and we hope that you have found the perfect grill pan for your personal needs. We had a great time testing the pans, cooking the food and tasting it and we hope that you have the same joy we had while eating evenly cooked medium rare steaks.
